MLB Betting: Nationals vs Phillies & Rockies vs Guardians – 06/16/22

In today’s MLB betting guide, the Philadelphia Phillies look to continue their dominance against the Washington Nationals in their first game of the series, while the Cleveland Guardians attempt to sweep the Colorado Rockies on the road.

Washington Nationals (+180) vs Philadelphia Phillies (-225)

The Phillies won yesterday’s game with a walk-off for the second time in three games against the Miami Marlins. The Nationals are a much weaker opponent, so they shouldn’t have to rely on late-game heroics to steal wins. This game should be wrapped up much earlier as the Nationals have lost four in a row, have 23 wins on the season, and are just 11-22 at home. The Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10 and surging to win after win with stellar batting that was cooled a bit in their previous series but looks to get going again against Nationals pitching, which ranks 30th in ERA (earned run average).

The Phillies have stellar pitcher Zack Wheeler on the mound in a season where he’s done everything well: 2.84 ERA, 2.13 FIP (fielding independent pitching), 1.08 WHIP (walks+hits per inning pitched), two home runs allowed, and 75 strikeouts in 63.1 innings pitched. The Nationals batters, who rank fifth in the league in batting average, will put him to the test. As for the Nationals’ pitching, it should be pretty simple for the Phillies to get going again offensively as Patrick Corbin is on the mound. His stats may look much worse with a 6.65 ERA, but his FIP is 4.56 which is still not the greatest. The Phillies rank in the top 10 in average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, and stolen bases, so it appears as though it will not be a fun time for Corbin on the mound. Take the Phillies and over (O9, -115).

Colorado Rockies (+110) vs Cleveland Guardians (-135)

The Rockies and Guardians play their final of their three-game series, which has seen the Guardians win the first two games. They are 8-2 in their last 10 and have won three in a row, while the Rockies are a below-average squad overall and 4-6 in their last 10 games. What the Rockies excel at is hits and batting average, but don’t take advantage of getting on base as much as they should.

The batting of the Rockies will be put to the test against Guardians’ starter Triston McKenzie, who has a WHIP of 0.89 and a strong defense behind him. On the Rockies’ side is Chad Kuhl who is an average starter but gives up way too many walks. The Guardians batters have been able to get on base, but have found it somewhat difficult to score as many runs as they should be getting in. Look for the Guardians to sweep the series and stay hot while the teams hit the under since it’s set so high (U11.5, -115).
