MLB Betting: Mets vs Reds & Nationals vs Phillies – 07/05/2022

There’s some great National League action on tap inside Tuesday’s full slate of Major League Baseball games. Two of the better contests are the New York Mets facing the Cincinnati Reds and the Philadelphia Phillies hosting the Washington Nationals. This betting guide will deliver some of the best value plays for those two contests.

New York Mets (-200) vs Cincinnati Reds (+165)

The Mets have won three of their last four, and starter Max Scherzer is set to pitch for the Mets for the first time in a month and a half. He was great in his first eight starts, going 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 59 strikeouts across 49.2 innings pitched. New York is 17-7 in the last 24 meetings between the teams, and the Reds have been struggling. Cincinnati has won just once in its last six games, and all that makes the best value the Mets run line (-1.5, -125).

The under has stuck in each of Cincinnati starter Nick Lodolo’s last three starts, and the under is 3-0-2 in the last five meetings between these teams. Scherzer should do his part, but there is a chance the bullpens let this one go. That said, the under is still the better play here, so lean towards the under (U9, -105) again in this one.

Washington Nationals (+135) vs Philadelphia Phillies (-160)

It’s been tough for the Nationals lately, as they’ve lost four in a row, including Monday’s heartbreaking, extra-inning loss. Starter Paolo Espino has been decent for Washington, with a 2.80 ERA on the season. However, Tuesday’s contest will be just the fifth start for Espino, and he has a 4.30 ERA in the last three. The Washington bullpen is going to get a workout, and that’s trouble against the fourth-best offense in baseball. Take the Phillies to win this one (-160).

The Phillies are also starting a pitcher who’s primarily a reliever in Christopher Sanchez. His only start was a brief 2.1-inning excursion for the Phillies on May 1. The over is 4-0 in Espino’s last four starts against a team with a winning record, and the over is 11-2 in the last 13 meetings between these teams. With both bullpens likely to get tons of action, making the over the play (O9.5, -110) in this contest.
